Before, he actually lived with his dad (played by Jude Law), but then the father died in a fire incident in a museum where he worked. Before this event, his dad, who also worked as a clock maker, brought a broken automaton to his house. It's something like a robot, and mostly used by magician. It also could write. They decided to fix this together.
After the fire, Hugo needed to live with his uncle, Claude. He worked and lived inside the wall of the railway station. That's why Hugo lived there.
To continue his work in repairing the automaton, he stole some of the parts machine in a toy shop inside the station.
Someday, when he tried to steal a toy, he was caught by the owner, Georges Méliès (Ben Kingsley). He then asked Hugo to empty his pockets, where he also kept his notebook. Then Georges took Hugo's notebook. He decided to take it, because he saw something that reminded him of something.
Hugo insisted to get his notebook back, because inside, there's a scheme of how to fix to automaton. The automaton was the only thing that's left from his father, and he believed his father sent him a message through this automaton.
So the journey of Hugo Cabret to get his notebook back started here, including when he met George's niece, Isabelle, (Chloë Grace Moretz); and the station inspector (Sacha Baron Cohen)

This movie was visually attractive. That's my first comment after watching this.
I kinda love this movie, not only you will see a visually attractive movie, here you could also watch a clip of black-and-white movie, and also how to make movies in the past, with its simplicity. And I think this movie was inspired by Georges Méliès' life :)
The pace of the movie in the beginning was kinda slow, but the movie became more interesting later on ;)
Actually I was a bit confused, of what's the purpose of this movie? What is Hugo doing in this movie? It all will be explained later in the movie :)
It's an interesting movie to watch. And love some insert of old movies here.
